Welcome to In-Seoul-ider.
In many cities, the public transportation system shuts down around midnight, leaving you dependent on expensive taxis or ride-sharing apps. Seoul, however, is a city that never sleeps. To facilitate its vibrant nightlife and late-shift economy, the city operates a dedicated nocturnal transit network called the Owl Bus. In this fourth part of our masterclass, we will provide a technical guide on how to utilize these late-night buses to navigate Seoul after the subways close.
Identifying the Owl Bus: The "N" Prefix
The Owl Bus is easily recognizable by its numbering system. Every late-night bus route begins with the letter "N" (representing "Night"), followed by a two-digit number. For example, N13, N15, or N62.
These routes are specifically designed to mirror the busiest subway lines or connect major nightlife hubs like Hongdae, Gangnam, Itaewon, and Dongdaemun. While a standard city bus stops around 11:30 p.m., the Owl Buses begin their operation at midnight and continue running until approximately 3:30 a.m. to 4:00 a.m., filling the gap until the first morning subway trains resume.
Fare Structure and Integrated Transfers
The fare for an Owl Bus is slightly higher than a standard daytime bus. As of 2026, the base fare is 2,500 KRW when using a transportation card. Despite the higher price, it remains significantly cheaper than a late-night taxi, which applies a 20% to 40% surcharge after midnight.
The free transfer system still applies to the Owl Bus. If you are transferring between two different N-bus lines to reach your destination, the transfer discount is valid. Furthermore, the transfer window is extended to 60 minutes during these hours, allowing for a more relaxed connection as the intervals between night buses are longer than daytime schedules.
Real-Time Tracking and Arrival Information
Because Owl Buses have longer intervals—usually between 20 to 35 minutes—waiting at a station without information can be frustrating. To use the system efficiently, you must rely on real-time data.
The digital BIT (Bus Information Terminal) at each bus stop remains active throughout the night, displaying exactly how many minutes remain until the next N-bus arrives. For a more proactive approach, use the KakaoBus or Naver Map apps. These apps allow you to see the live location of every Owl Bus on a map. By checking the app before leaving a building, you can minimize your exposure to the night air and time your arrival at the bus stop perfectly.
Strategic Boarding: Major Hubs and Routes
Owl Bus routes are axial, meaning they cross the city through major transit points.
N13 and N15: These are crucial for traversing the city north-to-south, connecting areas like Seoul Station, Dongdaemun, and Gangnam.
N62: This is a vital east-west link, connecting Hongdae to the eastern districts through the city center.
When planning your night, identify the nearest N-bus stop in advance. In 2026, many bus stops in Seoul have heated benches and wind shelters, making the wait for an Owl Bus comfortable even during the winter months when temperatures drop to 14°F (-10°C).
Onboard Experience and Safety
Owl Buses are equipped with free public Wi-Fi and high-resolution CCTV for safety. During the early hours (around 1 a.m. to 2 a.m.), these buses can be quite crowded with students and office workers.
A unique technical feature of the Owl Bus is the "Smart Get-Off" alert. If you are tired and afraid of missing your stop, you can set an arrival alarm in the KakaoBus app. Using your phone’s GPS, the app will vibrate or send a notification one stop before your destination. This is a common local hack for those who might fall asleep during the long ride home.
Mastering the Owl Bus network is the final hurdle in becoming a true Seoul insider. It gives you the freedom to enjoy the city's nightlife without the stress of taxi availability or high costs, all while moving within a safe and technologically integrated system.
