Seoul Public Transport Masterclass Part 15: How to Navigate the Seoul Station Transfer Labyrinth Efficiently
Welcome to In-Seoul-ider.
Seoul Station is the ultimate transportation hub of South Korea, serving as a massive junction for Subway Lines 1 and 4, the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, the Airport Railroad (AREX), and KTX high-speed trains. However, because these lines were built in different eras, transferring here can involve walking up to 15 minutes through a complex series of tunnels and escalators. In this final part of our public transport series, we provide a technical guide on how to navigate this "Labyrinth" without getting lost.
The Underground Labyrinth Logic
Seoul Station is divided into two major sections: the deep underground subway area and the massive surface-level train terminal.
The biggest technical challenge is transferring from the subway lines (1 and 4) to the Airport Railroad (AREX). These lines are physically separated by a long underground passage. If you follow the generic signs without a plan, you will likely spend 10 to 12 minutes walking. To minimize this, you must pay attention to the floor colors. Line 1 is dark blue, Line 4 is light blue, and the Airport Railroad is orange.
The "Fast Transfer" Positioning for AREX
If you are coming from Subway Line 1 and heading to the Airport Railroad, your boarding position is critical.
The transfer passage to the Airport Railroad is located at the very end of the Line 1 platform toward the Cheongnyangni direction. Boarding Car 1-1 will put you directly in front of the stairs leading to the transfer corridor. From there, it is a straight 300-meter walk equipped with moving walkways. For Line 4 users, the transfer point is located toward the Hoehyeon station direction. By standing at Car 10-4, you will emerge closest to the Airport Railroad link.
Navigating the KTX Connection
If you are transferring from the subway to a KTX high-speed train, do not follow the signs for "Exit." Look for the specific icons representing the "KTX Train Station."
You must travel from the B2 or B3 subway levels up to the 2nd floor (2F) of the main Seoul Station building. In 2026, there is a dedicated "Integrated Transfer Gate" that allows you to tag out of the subway and immediately enter the KTX waiting lounge area. This route is significantly faster than exiting the station to the street level and coming back in through the main entrance.
Utilizing the "Secret" Exit 15
Many travelers get trapped in the main exit areas (Exits 1-14) which lead to the crowded bus transfer center in front of the station. If your destination is the Seogye-dong area or the western side of the station, use Exit 15.
Exit 15 is located near the Airport Railroad terminal deep inside the station. It provides a quiet, direct link to the western exterior of Seoul Station, bypassing the massive crowds in the main lobby. This exit is a local secret for those who want to avoid the chaotic traffic and noise of the main station plaza.
Technical Hack: The City Airport Terminal
If you are taking the Airport Railroad (AREX) Express train to Incheon Airport, you can use the "City Airport Terminal" on the B2 level of Seoul Station.
This is a technical marvel that allows you to check in for your flight and drop off your heavy luggage right at the station before you even board the train. After checking in, you can go through immigration on the same floor. When you arrive at Incheon Airport, you skip the long check-in lines and enter through a dedicated "Fast Track" entrance. This turns the chaotic Seoul Station transfer into a seamless, high-speed travel experience.
Mastering Seoul Station is the ultimate test of a local insider. By understanding the car positions for fast transfers and utilizing the integrated gates for KTX and AREX, you can navigate the country's busiest hub with precision and ease.
